There are many reasons for women having anxiety around sex. What they all have in common is that once we are anxious, our nervous system kicks in and releases adrenaline, cortisol and other stress hormones. The surge of adrenaline and cortisol start our fight or flight response, making us more alert, our hearts beat faster and we become tense. Blood is quickly sent to preserve our vital organs and away from our extremities, including the pelvic area. It’s a primal response designed to keep us alive.
The natural response to anxiety impacts on sexual activity in various ways:
As our pelvis area is not part of the vital organs, blood moves away from the area where we want it to be flooding to for us to enjoy sex
The whole body tenses, including the pelvic area
Anxiety surrounding sex makes it difficult to relax and enjoy the experience. Tension can increase awkwardness, embarrassment and reinforce initial negativity. Soon a downward spiral is in place.
Changing the mindset around sex from something to be feared into something that is fun and pleasurable is a big step towards achieving orgasm. If you don’t relax, if you don’t let yourself go, you’ll be fighting a losing battle to reach orgasm.
The frustrating thing about this is that orgasms are known to reduce stress, reduce blood pressure and bring us happy hormones. So not only are you anxious in the first place, you’re having problems achieving something that is pleasurable and actually helps heal anxiety, stress and that also has other health benefits.
