10 Ways To Combat Fear

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Fear can be a real roadblock, holding us back from being the person we want to be and from being truly successful. Fear can hold you back a lifetime, if you let it.

There are several ways to overcome fear, without seeking help from a professional Life coach, counselling services. As a hypnotherapist, I am often the last resort. But here are my top 10 tips:

1) Understand what fear is and where it comes from:

Fear is an emotion we feel when we perceive a threat. It is a natural response that has evolved to help us survive. When we were cavemen and women, fear helped us to avoid being eaten by saber-toothed tigers!

Nowadays, we don't have to worry about being eaten by tigers, but we still experience fear. Fear can be triggered by many things: heights, public speaking, spiders, snakes, dogs, exams, etc.

2) Don't try to fight fear:

Trying to fight fear is like trying to fight gravity. It doesn't work! When you try to fight fear, you are actually giving it more power over you.

3) Accept fear:

The first step to overcoming fear is to accept that it is there. Once you have accepted it, you can start to deal with it.

4) Breathe:

When we are afraid, our breathing becomes shallow and fast. This only makes the fear worse.next time you feel afraid, take a few deep breaths and focus on the breath going in and out of your nose.

5) Visualize yourself overcoming fear:

Visualization is a powerful tool. See yourself in your mind's eye doing the thing you are afraid of. For example, if you are afraid of public speaking, visualize yourself giving a speech and everyone clapping afterwards.

6) Focus on the present moment:

When we are afraid, we often focus on what could go wrong in the future. This only makes the fear worse. Instead, focus on the present moment and what you are doing right now.

7) Use affirmations:

Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself. They can help to change your thinking and beliefs about yourself and the world. For example, if you are afraid of public speaking, you could repeat the affirmation "I am a confident speaker" to yourself.

8) Take action:

The best way to overcome fear is to take action. When you take action, you are proving to yourself that you can do it. For example, if you are afraid of public speaking, sign up for a speaking course or volunteer to give a speech.

9) Seek professional help:

If you have tried all of the above and you are still struggling with fear, it may be time to seek professional help. A qualified hypnotherapist can help you to overcome your fears.

10) Don't let fear hold you back:

Remember, fear is only a feeling. It cannot hurt you. Don't let it hold you back from living your life to the fullest.
