Finding Motivation to get us Through Difficult Times

Motivation is what drives you. However, finding motivation is not always easy, especially in these troubled times. Finding positivity is hard enough with rising bills that you know you can't afford, uncertainty about so many things globally, locally and personally. Sometimes, relationships and your sex life are problematic, the list could be never-ending. Yet, you are expected to find the motivation to keep going, not spiral into despair and turn to props such as drink and drugs to lose yourself and blot everything out. Some people turn to gambling or another person and have an affair. You are reading this because you know that none of this is the way forward. Turning to drink, drugs, sex, gambling soon become addictive behaviours; far better to find motivation towards good decisions and there is a way.


Let's start with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

When people have problems or difficulties in one area of their life, they become focused on particular needs.

The hierarchy starts at the bottom; a person cannot reach the top without first satisfying the needs at the bottom. Maslow's belief system was that you must achieve those at the bottom of the chart to move up. A person can move back down from time to time which is where many of us find ourselves due to the current situation.


There are many reasons why motivation levels drop, risking a psychological downward spiral for example:


  • Lack of confidence

  • Feeling inadequate

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Lacking interest in the purpose

  • No realistic goals

  • Putting off

  • Negative self-esteem


Whatever the reason, the longer you are 'down', the harder it becomes to find motivation to improve your situation. Your subconscious mind becomes your worst enemy, exacerbating your low mood or task avoidance. You make bad decisions instead of the right ones about relationships, diet/weight loss and finances, to name a few.
